Medical Insurance

Health insurance is essential and mandatory for all international students studying at UPC.  In BC, the Medical Services Plan (MSP) provides basic healthcare coverage, but there is a waiting period before coverage begins. This guide will help you understand MSP and the temporary insurance required during the waiting period.

BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) – International Student Health Fee

What is MSP?

The MSP is the public healthcare system in BC that covers:
Doctor visits
Hospital services
Diagnostic tests (e.g., X-rays, lab work)
Some specialist services

Who Needs MSP?
All international students studying in BC for more than six months must enroll in MSP. For international students, MSP is known as the International Student Health Fee. To avoid any gaps in coverage, all international students need to apply for MSP upon arrival in BC.

International Student Health Fee Cost
The cost for international students is $75 per month.
Payments are made directly to Health Insurance BC.

How to Apply for MSP

1. Apply online through the BC Government MSP website.
2. Provide your study permit.
3. Wait for your MSP card to arrive by mail.
For more details and to apply, visit MSP website.

Waiting Period & Temporary Insurance

Why Do You Need Temporary Insurance?

MSP coverage starts after a waiting period of up to three months from your arrival in BC. During this period, you must have private health insurance to cover medical expenses.

Temporary Insurance Options

Pick your own private insurance provider: You can compare plans online.
UPC insurance partner: Contact your admission advisor for more information.
UPC recommends purchasing temporary insurance before arriving in Canada to ensure uninterrupted coverage.
